The baby boomers, born between 1946 and 1964, represent a generation that grew up during a time of cultural and political upheaval. They embraced the TV age, participated in the iconic Woodstock festival, and actively protested the Vietnam War. This generation was also known for its social consciousness and willingness to challenge the status quo.
The 'Me' Generation?
Despite their contributions, baby boomers have been labeled as the 'me' generation, a term coined by writer Tom Wolfe to describe their perceived self-absorption and consumerism. However, demographer William Frey argues that this generation has always been under the spotlight and has achieved important milestones.
Aging America: A Growing Senior Citizen Population
The aging of baby boomers is part of a broader trend in the United States. By the end of the decade, all baby boomers will be 65 or older, and the number of people aged 80 and over is expected to double in 20 years. This shift is reflected in the country's population, with the share of senior citizens projected to rise from 18.7% in 2025 to nearly 23% by 2050.
The Impact of Immigration and Birth Rates
The aging of America is further compounded by longer life expectancy and lower birth rates. The average U.S. life expectancy at birth is expected to rise from 78.9 years in 2025 to 82.2 years in 2055. However, without immigration, the U.S. population is projected to start shrinking in five years, as deaths surpass births.
The Changing Landscape of Young Adulthood
Younger generations are missing out on traditional milestones, such as moving out of their parents' homes, landing jobs, and starting families. This is partly due to financial instability and the high cost of living, which makes it challenging for young adults to achieve these goals. A recent study by the Census Bureau revealed that fewer than a quarter of U.S. adults had hit these milestones by the early 2020s.
Economic Implications of an Aging Population
The aging of America could have significant economic implications. With fewer workers paying taxes, Social Security and Medicare may face increased pressure. The ratio of seniors to working-age people is expected to grow, putting a strain on the workforce.
Addressing the Fertility Crisis
Some argue that increasing fertility rates could help mitigate the effects of an aging population. Vice President JD Vance and Tesla CEO Elon Musk have advocated for policies that encourage parenthood, such as giving parents more voting power based on their number of children or providing low-interest loans to married parents.
However, demographer William Frey suggests that incentivizing fertility among U.S. women is challenging. He proposes that funding should instead support pre-kindergarten and paid family leave, making it easier and less expensive for people to have and raise children.
