Bold opening note: The judge has opened a path to deeper scrutiny in the Sherrone Moore case, raising questions about how the investigation was handled and what information should have been disclosed from the start. A judge granted a hearing on Tuesday to explore additional aspects of the investigation that led to charges against former University of Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore. Moore, 40, was arrested after being fired over a relationship with his executive assistant, and he now faces felony charges including home invasion, stalking, and illegal entry. His defense, led by attorney Ellen Michaels, argues that the case should be dismissed.
The defense contends that the arrest warrant was flawed because a police detective did not reveal Moore’s employer-employee relationship with the woman at the time the magistrate approved the warrant. Judge J. Cedric Simpson described this omission as potentially violating Moore’s due process and scheduled a March 2 hearing to hear testimony from law enforcement and other witnesses.
According to police, the woman ended the personal relationship with Moore a few days before his firing and did not answer a dozen calls or respond to several texts from him during that period.
Michaels defended Moore by arguing that frequent calls and texts from a coach to an executive assistant can be reasonable, especially as Moore was preparing his team for a bowl game. She asserted that such communications do not constitute stalking if they serve a legitimate purpose.
Prior to the hearing, Washtenaw County assistant prosecutor Kati Rezmierski had suggested that the hearing was unnecessary and would fall outside the judge’s discretion.
Moore served as Michigan’s head coach for two seasons after succeeding Jim Harbaugh, who stepped down to coach in the NFL with the Los Angeles Chargers. Michigan recently added Kyle Whittingham, the long-time Utah coach, to lead the program.
In a related note, Michaels has accused the woman’s personal attorney of sharing information with police to portray Moore negatively and to push for a potentially larger settlement arising from the university’s finances.
