Prepare to be amazed! The Investec Champions Cup witnessed a truly astonishing match, a whirlwind of tries and points that left fans breathless. Bristol Bears triumphed over the Bulls with a final score of 61-49 in a game that will be talked about for years to come.
The sheer volume of scoring was incredible, with a staggering 16 tries lighting up the scoreboard. Bristol's dominance was evident early on as they surged to a 21-0 lead within the first seven minutes, securing a bonus point in a mere 15 minutes!
The first half was a try-fest, with Bristol's Noah Heward completing a hat-trick and Stravino Jacobs scoring two for the Bulls. The halftime score was a high-octane 47-28 in favor of Bristol.
The second half continued the trend, with Pedro Rubiolo and Kalaveti Ravouvou adding to Bristol's tally, extending their lead to 61-35. Despite late tries from Sebastian de Klerk and Willie le Roux for the Bulls, the gap proved too wide to overcome.
But here's where it gets controversial... This match, with its incredible 110 points, almost broke the record for the most points scored in a Champions Cup game. However, it fell short by the equivalent of two converted tries. The record remains at 124 points, set in a match between Toulouse and Ebbw Vale back in the 1998-99 season.
In that record-breaking game, Toulouse also set the record for the most tries by a single team with 16. While the Bulls and Bears didn't break that record, their combined 16 tries in Pretoria was still a sight to behold.
The game's initial moments were nothing short of electrifying. Benhard Janse van Rensburg and Max Lahiff scored early tries for Bristol, followed by Heward's interception and subsequent try. The Bulls responded with a try from Jeandre Rudolph, but Bristol's momentum was unstoppable.
And this is the part most people miss... The first half was filled with drama. Jacobs was denied a hat-trick when Rich Lane illegally knocked the ball out of play, resulting in a yellow card and a penalty try for the Bulls.
The second half saw David Kriel score for the Bulls, reducing the gap, but Rubiolo responded for Bristol. Ravouvou then grabbed his second try. De Klerk and Le Roux scored late tries for the Bulls, but Bristol held firm.
