A groundbreaking initiative is unfolding in Africa, where a group of dedicated health experts are taking charge of their continent's future. The power of genome sequencing, a tool once out of reach, is now being harnessed thanks to a China-supported training program.
In the heart of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia's bustling capital, African and Chinese health professionals gathered in a state-of-the-art laboratory. Here, they embarked on a three-week journey to master the art of laboratory detection and genome sequencing. This program, hosted at the China-built Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention headquarters, is a testament to the growing China-Africa cooperation in public health.
For the participants, this hands-on training was a game-changer. Kone Klima Marcel, a microbiologist from Mali, described it as a "great opportunity" to learn Chinese DNA sequencing technology. He was particularly impressed by the DNA nanoballs sequencing and cyclone sequencing machine, technologies he believes will revolutionize DNA sequencing in Africa.
But here's where it gets controversial: Marcel, despite being new to these laboratory machines, believes the automated Chinese sequencing technology will revolutionize pathogen detection in African laboratories. He envisions a future where disease outbreaks can be analyzed in near real-time, within minutes, thanks to the reduction of manual steps.
Precious Simushi, a biomedical scientist from Zambia, echoed this sentiment. She praised the training for its insights into biosafety and Chinese surveillance systems. Simushi was particularly intrigued by a session on phages, a potential solution to the rising antimicrobial resistance. "In an era where antimicrobial resistance is on the rise, phage therapy has become a valuable tool. We've learned how to use phage therapy, an alternative to antibiotics, to tackle these resistances," she explained.
And this is the part most people miss: Simushi highlighted how the automated extraction technology introduced by Chinese experts will enable African health professionals to isolate bacteriophages in under 20 minutes. This rapid response during outbreaks is a game-changer.
Idrissa Laybohr Kamara, a doctor from Sierra Leone, emphasized the rising number of drug-resistant diseases in Africa. He believes the new phage therapy introduced by Chinese experts will be a significant breakthrough in treating diseases like tuberculosis, which are becoming increasingly widespread.
"This is the first time I've heard of phage therapy, a new technology and treatment. It's crucial that it can address antibiotic resistance in Africa," Kamara said, having completed his master's and PhD studies in China.
Liu Wenfeng, a Chinese trainer and researcher at BGI Group, summed up the workshop's impact: "We've brought several advanced technologies, including DNA sequencing and antibiotic treatment, to help African health professionals tackle drug-resistant diseases."
The workshop, concluding on Sunday, has brought together 30 participants from 16 African countries. The focus has been on core laboratory skills, accurate pathogen detection, drug-resistance monitoring and analysis, and standardized laboratory quality management.
As the workshop draws to a close, one question remains: How will this newfound knowledge shape Africa's public health landscape? The answers are yet to be written, but one thing is certain: Africa's health experts are now equipped with powerful tools to tackle some of the continent's most pressing health challenges.
