The New Jersey Devils (17-13-1) are in a tough spot. A five-game home losing streak has them clinging to a wildcard spot, and now they face a formidable Anaheim Ducks (19-11-1) team on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. ET. But here's where it gets even more challenging: injuries are decimating the Devils' roster.
A Depleted Devils Squad
Head coach Sheldon Keefe faces a daunting task. Forward Timo Meier is on personal leave due to a family health matter, and defenseman Simon Nemec is sidelined with a lower-body injury. Adding to the woes, Arseny Gritsyuk, Jack Hughes, Tony DeAngelo, and several others are also out. Keefe acknowledged the challenge, recalling a similar situation earlier in the season where the Devils overcame eight absences to secure a win.
Can the Devils Weather the Storm?
Despite the injuries, Keefe remains optimistic. He emphasizes the need for a collective effort, highlighting the importance of puck management, structure, and special teams play. The Devils will need to be disciplined and patient against the Ducks' high-octane offense, which leads the league in odd-man rushes.
Anaheim's Speed Threat
The Ducks are a team built for speed and skill. Their quick transitions and offensive firepower pose a significant threat. Keefe stresses the importance of neutral zone play, aiming to disrupt the Ducks' rush and capitalize on offensive opportunities.
Controversial Strategy?
Interestingly, Keefe advocates for an aggressive approach from his defensemen, encouraging them to pinch and contribute offensively. This strategy, while risky, could be crucial in generating scoring chances. But is it too risky against a team as fast as the Ducks?
Key Players to Watch
- Devils: Jesper Bratt, despite a recent scoring drought, leads the team in points. Paul Cotter has been hot lately, contributing both goals and assists.
- Ducks: Leo Carlsson is having a breakout season, leading the team in goals and points. Cutter Gauthier is also on pace for a career year.
Beyond the Game
Saturday's game is Devils Youth Foundation Day, with kids taking on various roles throughout the game. A silent auction is also underway, featuring unique items like a Jack Hughes curated basket and a pizza-making experience with Nico Hischier.
The Big Question
Can the injury-plagued Devils find a way to halt their losing streak against a potent Ducks team? Will Keefe's aggressive defensive strategy pay off, or will it backfire against Anaheim's speed? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
