DiSanto Arena: Inside CWRU's $20M Historic Renovation (2026)

Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) is gearing up for a transformative renovation of one of its most historic buildings, with plans to invest nearly $20 million. This ambitious project marks a significant milestone, as it will be the first expansion of the Adelbert Gym in over a century. The gym, a cornerstone of campus life since 1888, is set to undergo a complete overhaul, thanks to the generous support of philanthropic donors.

The renovation, valued at $19.4 million, will breathe new life into the historic facility, enhancing its functionality and appeal for students, varsity athletes, and the local community. The project, which commenced in March 2024, is scheduled for completion in May 2027. One of the key highlights of this transformation is the addition of a new basketball court, which will be named Brennan Industries Court in honor of a substantial donation from the DiSanto family and Brennan Industries. This gesture not only supports the renovation but also underscores the university's commitment to excellence and community engagement.

The DiSanto family, renowned for their philanthropy, has pledged a total of $5.9 million for the project. This includes a $900,000 contribution last week, in addition to a previous commitment of $5 million in 2023. The renovation will expand the gym's footprint by 6,500 square feet, adding new locker rooms, a social space known as the Spartan Gallery, and a modern lobby. The Brennan Industries Court, with a seating capacity of 1,400, will be a state-of-the-art facility, providing an enhanced experience for spectators.

The renovation also prioritizes accessibility, with the addition of an elevator and accessible public restrooms. The project will also include interior and exterior infrastructure updates, ensuring the gym's longevity and functionality. The design and construction are being handled by OSports, a Cleveland-based architecture firm, and Panzica Construction, respectively. CWRU President Eric Kaler expressed enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing its potential to modernize the space and elevate the university's athletic facilities to a premier NCAA Division III standard.

This renovation is a testament to the university's commitment to preserving its history while embracing modern advancements. The Adelbert Gym, originally constructed as a World War I armory, has been an integral part of the campus for over a century. The upcoming expansion, however, was not initially planned for the gym but was instead built as a military facility. The war's conclusion led to the conversion of the space, which was then integrated into the gym with a hallway on the southwest side of the new building. This renovation represents a new chapter in the gym's history, blending the past and present to create a vibrant and accessible community hub.
