European Markets: A Soft Start as Central Banks Take Center Stage (2026)

European markets are poised for a soft opening on Wednesday, as investor sentiment sours ahead of central bank decisions. The U.K.'s FTSE index is expected to open slightly higher, while Germany's DAX and France's CAC 40 are predicted to hover just above the flatline. Italy's FTSE MIB, however, is forecast to dip 0.1%.

The focus of market participants this week will be on central bank actions, with the European Central Bank's final policy meeting of the year on Thursday taking center stage. Despite expectations that rates will remain at 2%, ECB President Christine Lagarde hinted at another upward revision to euro zone growth forecasts. In September, the ECB raised its annual GDP growth forecast to 1.2%.

The Bank of England, Riksbank, and Norges Bank will also conclude their monetary policy decisions for 2025 this week. The Bank of England's monetary policy committee is anticipated to cut interest rates by 25 basis points to 3.75%, considering the weak growth and potential rise in unemployment. They will closely monitor U.K. inflation data for November, which is expected to show a slight decrease from 3.6% in October.

Globally, U.S. stock futures slid overnight after the S&P 500 experienced a third consecutive losing session on Tuesday. This came as investors analyzed the U.S. jobs landscape following the release of October and November data by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The data revealed that the U.S. economy lost 105,000 jobs in October but added 64,000 jobs in November.

In the Asia-Pacific region, markets traded mixed on Wednesday as investors digested Japan's trade data. CNBC's Liz Napolitano contributed to this market report.
