Scotland is currently grappling with a dramatic surge in flu cases, leaving many to wonder: are we on the brink of a severe flu season? And this is the part most people miss: while flu-like illnesses are rising across all age groups, younger populations—ages one to four and five to fourteen—are bearing the brunt of the outbreak. Still, 40% of hospital admissions are among those aged 65 and over, a pattern consistent with past flu seasons. Tragically, the flu has already claimed lives, with 17 deaths provisionally linked to the virus and 21 where flu was mentioned on death certificates.
To put this in perspective, during the peak of the last winter flu season, these figures soared to 137 and 171, respectively, with the majority affecting those over 80. This week, BBC Scotland News reached out to all 14 health boards and 32 councils to gauge the impact on hospitals and schools. While some reported pupil absences in line with previous years, East Lothian Council stands out with a higher absence rate compared to the same period last year. Midlothian Council also flagged a 'high' staff absence rate, citing colds and flu as key contributors.
Health boards across Scotland are sounding the alarm, with many reporting significantly higher flu cases this year. Some have even implemented precautionary measures, such as ward restrictions and mandatory face coverings. NHS Grampian, for instance, revealed that 33 patients are currently hospitalized with flu, occupying one in every 35 beds at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. A spokesperson highlighted a 560% increase in flu hospitalizations compared to last year.
The Ayrshire and Arran health board has taken drastic steps, suspending routine hospital visits, while Glasgow's health board is urging patients with mild to moderate symptoms to stay home and avoid A&E. Dumfries and Galloway's medical director has echoed this plea, advising the public to steer clear of hospitals, care homes, and healthcare settings if unwell.
But here's where it gets controversial: despite the surge, concerns have emerged over the availability of flu vaccinations. Community Pharmacy Scotland reports a spike in demand for private flu jabs, with some pharmacies running out of stock. Interestingly, even individuals eligible for the NHS vaccine are turning to community pharmacies for quicker or more convenient access, putting additional strain on private supplies.
Neil Gray remains confident, stating the Scottish government has 'no concern' about vaccine shortages, citing 'adequate stocks'. However, Scottish Labour's health spokeswoman, Jackie Baillie, disagrees, calling the latest figures a 'cause for concern'. She points out that 400,000 fewer adults are vaccinated compared to two years ago, with children's vaccination rates also declining. Some areas, she notes, haven't even started vaccinations yet.
