Graham Ashcraft's Arbitration Victory: A Breakthrough for the Reds' Relief Pitcher
The Cincinnati Reds' right-hander, Graham Ashcraft, has emerged victorious in his arbitration hearing, securing a substantial salary increase for the 2026 season. ESPN's Jeff Passan reports that Ashcraft and his representatives at the Bledsoe Agency successfully argued for a $1.75MM salary, surpassing the team's initial offer of $1.25MM. This win marks a significant milestone, as players have now won all five arbitration hearings decided thus far in 2026.
Ashcraft, who will turn 28 next week, had a remarkable breakout season in the bullpen. Transitioning from a starter to a reliever, he showcased his versatility by pitching 65 1/3 innings with a 3.99 ERA. Despite a forearm strain that sidelined him for two weeks in late August/early September, Ashcraft demonstrated his resilience by posting a 5.13 shutout innings streak upon his return. His impressive performance was further highlighted by a blazing fastball averaging 97.1 mph, a slider at 89.8 mph, and an exceptional 22.5% strikeout rate, which is in line with league average.
What sets Ashcraft apart is his ability to generate swinging strikes at a rate of 13.2%, surpassing the league average by over two percentage points. He also maintained a solid 8.8% walk rate and an impressive 55.9% ground-ball rate. Initially utilized in lower-leverage spots, Ashcraft earned the trust of manager Terry Francona, becoming one of his top options in high-pressure situations by season's end.
While Tony Santillan worked in the most pressure-packed spots, Ashcraft closely followed, ranking slightly ahead of closer Emilio Pagan, who is typically reserved for traditional ninth-inning duties. The Reds' decision to re-sign Pagan to a two-year deal, with the second season being a player option, further solidifies Ashcraft's role as one of Pagan's top setup men. If Pagan opts out and signs elsewhere, Ashcraft could emerge as a potential closing prospect in 2027.
This arbitration victory marks Ashcraft's first, but it won't be his last. He remains controllable through 2028 and is set to receive two more raises in arbitration over the next couple of offseasons. With his exceptional performance and increasing value, Ashcraft is poised to become a cornerstone of the Reds' bullpen, leaving a lasting impact on the team's success.
