JBL LIVE 780Nc Noise-Cancelling Headphones: A Worthy Upgrade?
Two years ago, I reviewed the JBL LIVE 770Nc headphones and recommended them to all users. Now, I'm back with a follow-up review of the latest iteration, the JBL LIVE 780Nc noise-cancelling headphones. With a price tag of $299 NZD, these headphones are an upgrade from the previous model, but is it worth the investment?
Sound Quality: Impeccable as Always
JBL headphones have always impressed me with their sound quality, and the 780Nc is no exception. These headphones deliver crystal clear audio, whether you're listening to music or movies. I was particularly impressed by the clarity of the instruments in Taylor Swift's music, allowing me to hear each one distinctly. For movie enthusiasts, the booming score of Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight and the roar of the Batmobile will sound even more immersive with these headphones.
Noise Cancellation: A Step Up
Noise cancellation is a feature I've come to appreciate in headphones, and the 780Nc excels in this area. It effectively blocks out surrounding noise, providing a peaceful listening experience. This is especially useful when traveling or in noisy environments, ensuring you can focus on your music or calls without distractions.
Comfort: Suction Cup Covers and an Extendable Headband
I'm not a fan of earbuds, and the 780Nc's suction cup covers provide a comfortable alternative. These headphones fit snugly over your ears, and the extendable headband ensures they stay in place, even during extended wear. However, I do wish the headband extended longer to accommodate those with longer faces.
Battery Life and Durability: A Mixed Bag
The 780Nc comes with a USB-C cable, allowing you to use any phone charger for charging. The headphones were already charged when I opened them, but a full charge before use is recommended. As for battery life, a full charge should last around 80 hours, which is impressive. I typically use headphones daily and find that I need to charge them every few weeks. However, I hope that the headphones will last longer than two years of daily use, as my previous pair, the 770Nc, lasted only two years before the right side broke.
Final Thoughts
If you have the budget, the JBL LIVE 780Nc noise-cancelling headphones are a worthwhile investment. They offer superior sound quality compared to cheaper alternatives and provide a more comfortable experience than expensive first-party earbuds. However, I do hope that JBL addresses the durability concerns to ensure these headphones last longer than my previous pair.
In my opinion, the 780Nc is a solid choice for those seeking an upgrade in their headphone experience, especially for those who prioritize sound quality and noise cancellation.
