Former Lions Offensive Coordinator John Morton Joins Broncos for Playoff Preparation
The Detroit Lions recently parted ways with offensive coordinator John Morton after just one season, but this hasn't stopped him from finding new opportunities. According to Adam Schefter, Morton has already joined the Denver Broncos to assist in their playoff preparation against the Buffalo Bills. This move isn't surprising, considering Morton's history with the Broncos. Prior to his time with the Lions, Morton served as Denver's pass game coordinator for the 2023 and 2024 seasons, and his relationship with Broncos head coach Sean Payton dates back two decades. During that time, Morton was the Saints' pass game coordinator and offensive assistant under Payton in 2006.
Despite the lack of success in Detroit, Morton's work ethic is evident in his quick transition back into coaching. The Lions saw a decline in points per game (33.2 to 28.3) and yards per game (409.5 to 373.2) under Morton's leadership, but this didn't deter him from seeking new challenges. The team's performance decline occurred despite Morton's previous working relationship with both coach Dan Campbell and quarterback Jared Goff, who he worked with as an offensive assistant for the Lions in 2022. Campbell even took over play-calling duties from Morton midway through the season, indicating a shift in responsibilities.
The Broncos will face the Bills in the Divisional Round of the 2025-26 NFL playoffs at 4:30 p.m. ET on Saturday. This move highlights Morton's willingness to adapt and his commitment to the craft, even after a less-than-ideal season with the Lions.
