A Cosmic Homecoming
Tonight, December 8th, we have a front-row seat to an extraordinary event. Three astronauts, Jonny Kim, Ryzhikov, and Zubritsky, will bid farewell to the International Space Station (ISS) and embark on their journey back to Earth. You can join this historic moment live, starting at 4:45 pm EST.
The livestream will capture the final moments of their mission, from the closure of hatches between the Soyuz spacecraft and the ISS at 5:10 pm EST, to the undocking at 8:15 pm EST, and finally, the deorbit and landing coverage at 10:30 pm EST.
A Journey of Milestones
If all goes according to plan, the Soyuz spacecraft carrying these astronauts will touch down on the steppe of Kazakhstan near Dzhezkazgan at 12:04 am EST on Tuesday, December 9th. By then, this trio will have accomplished an incredible feat, orbiting Earth a whopping 3,920 times and traveling nearly 104 million miles (or 167 million kilometers) together.
A Changing Crew
After their departure, the ISS will still be bustling with activity, housing seven crew members. The new arrivals, Williams, Kud-Sverchkov, and Mikaev, joined the station on Thanksgiving Day, adding to the diverse international crew. However, their launch wasn't without incident. Shortly after their Soyuz rocket took off from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, the service platform crashed into the flame trench, causing damage to the launch pad.
The repair process for this pad, currently the only one capable of launching Russian astronaut and cargo missions to the ISS, remains uncertain.
