The Pic du Midi de Bigorre, a beacon of European scientific exploration, is soaring to new heights with EU support. This iconic landmark, perched above the French Pyrenees, is set to embark on a transformative journey in 2025, thanks to a substantial grant from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The historic Observatory, a cornerstone of research and public engagement, is undergoing a remarkable expansion, solidifying its role as a hub for cutting-edge science and education.
This €5.4 million project, bolstered by €3 million in EU funding, is part of a broader European initiative to elevate scientific excellence and sustainable development in remote and mountainous regions. The upgrades are designed to keep the Pic du Midi de Bigorre Observatory at the forefront of environmental and astronomical research while enhancing the experience for students, researchers, and the public.
A key focus of this project is the enhancement of the Observatory's research infrastructure. By expanding critical buildings and modernizing essential equipment, the initiative ensures that the Pic du Midi can accommodate more international teams and support increasingly complex experiments. This expansion includes the extension of the Dauzère/Soler building, which now provides accommodation for up to 30 researchers, fostering long-term campaigns and collaborative research.
The building also features a seminar room, promoting scientific exchange, and a central control room, streamlining the operation of telescopes and experiments. Additionally, the environmental platform has been doubled in size, a crucial area for atmospheric physics research. Researchers at the Pic du Midi actively monitor greenhouse gases, airborne pollutants, and other environmental indicators, benefiting from improved working conditions and flexibility in deploying sensors and instruments.
Another significant aspect of the project is the strengthening of the Observatory's astronomical capabilities. A new extension has been constructed adjacent to the iconic Bernard Lyot Telescope, one of Europe's most powerful tools for studying stars and planetary systems. This addition facilitates the relocation of the aluminising tank and infrastructure, creating space for the installation of SPIP, a next-generation infrared spectropolarimeter. SPIP is designed to analyze stellar magnetic fields and understand their impact on exoplanet environments, positioning the Pic du Midi as a key contributor to star-planet interaction studies.
The upgrades also improve visitor access and enhance the Observatory's science outreach mission. The Pic du Midi has long been celebrated for its scientific significance and breathtaking landscapes, and the improvements aim to deepen this dual identity. By bringing science closer to the public in a unique natural setting, the Observatory aims to engage and educate a wider audience.
