The Boston Red Sox are betting on potential, signing veteran right-hander Seth Martinez to a minor league deal! But does this move truly address their bullpen needs, or is it just another depth signing?
Just days after announcing their initial spring training non-roster invitees, the Red Sox have added another arm to the mix. Chris Cotillo of MassLive reported that Boston has reached an agreement with Seth Martinez, a veteran pitcher who will join the team at their big league camp next month. The deal, confirmed by a source on Friday, was initially reported by SoxProspects' Andrew Parker.
Martinez, age 31, brings a wealth of experience to the table, having pitched in 117 Major League games, all in relief, since his debut in 2021. He spent a significant portion of those years – three seasons – as a member of the Houston Astros' bullpen. Over his big league career, he holds a 4.00 ERA with 126 strikeouts across 144 innings. Notably, Martinez was a reliable presence for the Astros from 2022 to 2024, making at least 29 appearances each year. He was particularly effective in 2022, a season that culminated in a World Series victory for Houston, although his individual contribution to the championship run isn't always highlighted.
But here's where it gets controversial... Martinez's journey hasn't been a straight line. His time with Houston concluded last November when he was placed on waivers. Since then, he's bounced around, spending time with three different organizations – Arizona, Miami, and Seattle – during the offseason. In a surprising turn, he was re-claimed by the Marlins in mid-March, the same team he played for in 2025. Last season with the Marlins, Martinez posted a 5.40 ERA in six big league appearances, all coming in the final month of the season. He also pitched for their Triple-A affiliate in Jacksonville, where he had a 3.71 ERA and struck out 54 batters in 43 ⅔ innings. This inconsistency raises questions about his true potential and whether he can consistently perform at the major league level.
And this is the part most people miss... While Martinez has MLB experience, the expectation is that he'll start the 2026 season with Triple-A Worcester. He'll provide bullpen depth and serve as an option if injuries or performance issues arise in Boston. Martinez joins a growing list of pitchers who have signed minor league deals with the Red Sox in recent weeks, including Osvaldo Berrios, Alec Gamboa, Hobie Harris, T.J. Sikkema, and Devin Sweet. This influx of arms suggests the Red Sox are prioritizing depth and competition in their bullpen.
What do you think about this signing? Is Seth Martinez a valuable addition to the Red Sox organization, or just another name on a long list of minor league pitchers hoping for a shot? Does his journey through multiple organizations raise red flags, or does it demonstrate his resilience and willingness to adapt? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
