This change, implemented after user feedback and concerns surfaced on platforms like X, is part of an enhanced Hakikisha feature.
But here's where it gets controversial... While some users are finding this extra step a bit of a hassle, others are breathing a sigh of relief. The original Hakikisha service, launched way back in 2015, simply showed you the recipient's name for confirmation. This new version, which kicked in around December 2025 and primarily impacts transactions via the M-Pesa SIM Toolkit (STK), is designed to be a much stronger safeguard. Think of it as a double-check to prevent those dreaded accidental transfers that can lead to significant financial losses and a mountain of reversal requests.
And this is the part most people miss... This isn't the only recent change sparking conversations. Safaricom has also been clarifying how automatic deductions can occur without a PIN prompt. If you've activated M-Pesa Ratiba, a standing order service introduced in October 2024, and have enabled certain auto-deduction settings (often related to services like Lipa Mdogo Mdogo), then yes, money can be transferred without you needing to enter your PIN each time. This feature is designed for convenience, allowing for recurring payments for bills, rent, or subscriptions.
